Lot 151: Gertrud and Otto Natzler

Spherical vase, closed form

1940
Terra-cotta with velvet blue mat glaze, partially glazed, flowing
Natzler inventory #490
Studio
Signed "G&O Natzler"
8.5 cm x 11.5 cm diameter
Certain techniques used on this form are similar to those Otto devised originally in Vienna; not glazing the inside of a closed form, applying the glaze as an overflow so that one could see the soft glaze edge and the terra-cotta color of the smoothed clay surface. Only 5 ceramics received this Velvet Blue mat glaze, which is similar to a glaze on a bottle the Natzler's made in Vienna in 1938, making this form particularly rare.
Exhibited: Fine Arts Gallery, San Diego (now the San Diego Museum of Art), 1940
Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000
Price Realized: $7,350
